Examples of Negative Indicators
- What percentage of our disability claims are related to mental health?
- Are our premiums for disability insurance on the rise?
- Are extended health and drug premiums also on the rise?
- What is our absenteeism rate? Is it on the rise year over year?
- What is our turnover rate? From exit interviews, are we tracking reasons for leaving?
- Are our supervisors at all levels checking in with staff to see how they’re doing? Are they aware of those who are struggling with mental health but able to come to work and perform at some level?
- Are our accidents and incidents in the workplace decreasing or increasing?
Examples of Positive Indicators
- Although recruitment is challenging in today’s market, do we experience the same challenges as other employers and to the same extent?
- Is our employee retention rate where we would like it to be?
- Do our employees approach their supervisors when they are struggling with mental health issues? Are they aware that we genuinely care and want to ensure they receive appropriate support?
- Are our staff engaged and energized when faced with changes from inside or outside the organization? Have we equipped them with skills and resources to feel confident and ready to problem-solve?
- Do our staff members honestly go the extra mile for each other and for our customers/clients? Does ‘doing the right thing’ come easily to them?
The more that we are able to convert negative indicators to positives, the better the organization’s ability to manage or even reduce expenses, such as: benefit premiums, costs of absenteeism/presenteeism, costs related to employee turnover and recruitment & onboarding. In addition, productivity improvement – both as an individual contributor as well as a team member can also be measured.
